Paul Denegri HonARAM FTCL LTCL

Paul began his musical career as a Junior Exhibitioner at the Royal College of Music, studying
trumpet with Colin Cleague (English National Opera).

 

At Trinity College of Music Paul studied the trumpet with Iaan Wilson (BBC Symphony Orchestra), John Wilbraham (BBC Symphony Orchestra). and composition with Dr Brian Blackwood. At Trinity College he was awarded the I’ll Sono di Ottone Prize for Performance twice in successive years and the Student Union Chamber Prize.

 

Following on from music college he performed and recorded regularly with many orchestras, including the
London Festival Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

In 2008 in recognition of outstanding services to music Paul was awarded an Honorary Associate of The Royal Academy of Music London for outstanding contributions to music. Paul has earned his reputation as an

inspirational and creative teacher, conductor, composer, arranger, performer, songwriter and adjudicator.

In 1986 at the age of just 24 he was appointed Head of Brass, Percussion and Jazz and Commercial Music at Wells
Cathedral Specialist Music School one of only four government funded specialist music schools in the UK. He led both Brass and Rock & Pop, two highly successful and inspirational departments within the specialist music school for 31 years gaining national and international recognition for outstanding training for young musicians.

 

From 2017-2020 Paul was award the position of Head of Music Performance at Wells Cathedral School.

During Paul's time at Wells he also held the post of principal conductor of the Schools Philharmonic Orchestra

and also rehearsed the Wells Cathedral School Symphony Orchestra in preparation for the conductor in
residence Christopher Adey and many other internationally renowned conductors.

Paul currently gives a lot of his time to the community beyond his professional playing and work with musical ensembles through weekly visits to Castle House Nursing Home and Glastonbury Care Home where he is a

music volunteer singing and playing guitar for singing circle groups as well as playing bedside one to one for those residents unable to leave their room and in many cases their bed. 

 

Inspired by the power of music that he has witnessed close up in care homes Paul has taken a special interest in giving live music for those people at the very end of their life bringing peace of mind and comfort. He now runs

his own social care music project; Music Hears You. 

Paul is still a busy freelance trumpet player across all genres including being one of the two resident trumpet

players in the highly acclaimed band DT8.  He is the principal conductor of The Somerset County Youth Concert Band and the conductor and musical and artistic director of  Wells City Band. In the past few years in his continued pursuit to give back to the musical community Paul has returned to his brass bands conducting roots working as

guest conductor for brass bands among many others; Lyme Regis Band, Crewkerne Silver Band, Chard Concert Brass, St Swithins Brass Band, Burtle Brass. 
 

Paul is currently the specialist trumpet teacher at Trinity Academy Bristol and his highly successful teaching

career has seen him teach trumpet and songwriting at many schools across the whole of the SW  region from

Truro to Taunton to Sherborne to Bristol University and many more as well as pupils from abroad online. 

 

He has coached trumpet and brass for all of the UK’s major youth ensembles including NCO, NYWO
NYWE and many county orchestras and bands. He is a published composer and arranger and has his own
company Pandon Ltd which looks after his publishing and copyright. Paul has also had works published on the Superbrass catalogue and recently on the Trinity College of Music exam syllabus. In 2026 Paul will be launching

and presenting the new podcast; Music Hears You.

Paul is a published writer of articles for in house magazines where the interest is in music and songs in particular.

He gives talks and lectures to a wide variety of organisations form schools, sixth form colleges and community groups and organisations. 

Paul was invited to be the Artistic Director of The South West Music School which is a member of
the DfES Dance and Ballet scheme. supporting its artistic vision. He maintained a close relationship with the

school as a mentor, on the audition panel, as a trumpet teacher and ensemble coach.

Away from music Paul is a passionate Yeovil Town FC Season ticket holder and follows the club home and away

work commitments permiting. He also has a fascination and love of English Medieval and Tudor history,

rock and hard rock music attending as many gigs where possible, the Apollo moon landings, music biographies

and writing,
